Power Failure, Wind and Rain are Irene Impacts So Far: Strong winds and occasionally torrential rain falls have been the main features of the remnants of Hurricane Irene as it 1st rolled in to the 2 towns on Sunday morning. No storm-related wounds were described as of 9:30 a.m. A quick spurt of thunder and lightning was also observed on Sunday morning. Scattered power outages were described on Bay Road, Day Avenue, Highland Street and areas of downtown. The biggest power failure was along Moulton Street, wherever 132 customers lost power at about 9 a.m. Because of the number of storm-related outages, National Grid wasn't providing particular estimates for when power would be restored. Trees had fallen in the road in a lot of spots, admitting Larch Row in Wenham and Bay Road in Hamilton. Local residents helped police force move the trees from the road in both cases. A tree also fell on wires on Kimball Avenue in Wenham. Lyons ambulance, which handles emergency calls in both towns, usually answers from its Beverly or Danvers base. But during the storm on Sunday it has an ambulance stationed at the Hamilton fire station. A shelter was also regular to open at the old library in Hamilton beginning at 9 a.m. It is a place for folks without power to reload electronic device and anyone who is headed there is asked to bring their own food.
